Grey Shanked Douc Langur

Listed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature); on the “World’s 25 Most Endangered Primates" list.

Populations are estimated at between 600-700 individuals fragmented through 5 Vietnamese provinces; Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Kon Tum, Gia Lai, and Binh Dinh.

During the Vietnam War (1955-1975) soldiers used these monkeys as target practice; greatly reducing their numbers.

Repopulation attempts are occurring with confiscated individuals that have been rescued from smugglers, and black market dealers. They are primarily hunted for their meat, and their bones which are traditionally thought to have medicinal purposes.
